Ingredients
- Rice – 250g
- Urad Dal – 2 -3 tbsp
- Fenugreek Seeds – ½ tbsp
- Thin Rice flakes – 5 tbsp
- Coconut – 1 cup (Grated)
- Jaggery – According to taste
- Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
- Salt – A pinch
Preparation Method
- Soak Rice, Urad Dal, Fenugreek Seeds for 3 hours. --(1)
- Wash Rice flakes in water. Do NOT soak it in water. – (2)
- Grind (1) and (2) to a fine paste.
- Add grated Coconut to the mixture and grind for a minute.
- Transfer the mixture to a steel vessel, cover it and ferment it overnight.
- Next morning add Jaggery, Cumin seeds and Salt.
- Heat the appada kaavali (A pan used to prepare appa which has round depressions).
- Add Oil to the depressions.
- Add enough batter to the depressions. Cover it and cook till golden brown.
- Turn the appas upside down and cook till golden brown.
- Remove the appas from the pan to the serving platter.
Note
- chappe (Plain) appa is also prepared. Instead of Jaggery, Onion, Green Chillies and Coriander leaf is added.
- It is eaten with Coconut chutney
